MollyQueen @ LadyFest - Saturday 19th November

Saturday 19th November 11am onwards! (Craft fair finishes at 5)

Ladyfest is a community-based, not-for-profit global music and arts festival for female artists that features bands, musical groups, performance artists, authors, spoken word and visual artists, films, lectures, art exhibitions and workshops; it is organized by volunteers.

The festival will be taking place on November 19th 2011 starting with a craft fair and poetry in the daytime and going on through to the evening with live music, dj’s, art, performance and more, across 6 stages in 5 venues. A fabulous showcase of female comedians, singer/songwriters, DJs, musicians, crafters, makers, artists, photographers, poets and dancers.

The LadyFest venues this year are; The Maze, The Loft, Fade, The Lincolnshire Poacher and the Golden Fleece, all on Mansfield Road in Nottingham. Over the day, we will be showcasing some of the best female talent in music, literature, performing art and comedy, along with workshops, exhibitions and a craft fair, run by Mollyqueen, at The Loft.

The festival is run by volunteers, with all proceeds going to our two chosen charities, The Nottingham Women’s Centre and Family First Nottingham. (scroll down for links)

Heres a bit of info about the daytime proceedings:

***You wont need a ticket for the daytime events but all donations to our selected charities will be much appreciated***

Mollyqueen will be presenting a selection of craft stalls at The Loft, including work by Glamorous Glass, Gifts by Genie, Mwanabibi Sikomo, Lucy Kilbane, Claudia Schaaf, Adeline Jones and more. There will also be an Art exhibition and workshop with Chrissy Sabberton and a photography exhibition from Emma Neale at Miss Rain Photography. The Loft will be open from 11am through until the evening when it will become another music stage.

In the Lincolnshire Poacher (upstairs) there’ll be Literature and Poetry readings from some fabulously talented poets:

Nicola Monaghan
Rebecca S Buck
Sandy Hopton
Nicki Hastie
Pippa Hennessey
Victoria Oldham
Melanie Legge

Here’s a bit of info about the evening’s proceedings

***You WILL need tickets to access the venues in the evening. Click the link at the end of the post for more info.***

The acoustic venue is Fade, the hard to find cafe. Confirmed so far, artists include Meri Everitt, Delicata and Grace and the Magic Roots.

The Maze and The Loft will be our main band venues (after the craft fair finishes!) Acts include; Hooker, Obsessive Compulsive, Plague of Ares, Pussycat and the Dirty Johnsons, The Smears, Greta and the Guignolets, Kerosene Queen and Healthy Junkies.

The Lincolnshire Poacher will be this year’s comedy venue (upstairs) with comedy from Hectic Egg and more!

The Maze has kindly provided us with the use of the upstairs room so that the wonderful ‘Pleased To Tease You’ and ‘Dante’s Daughters’ can wow you with their dance.

The Golden Fleece will be home to our fantastic DJ’s, DJ Solstice, Stiff Kittens, DJ Elmo and Blonde Pony.

All of these venues are located within a few hundred-metre stretch of Mansfield road as it winds its way down into Nottingham City Centre. With so much to see and do, it’s well worth buying a ticket and helping both of these fantastic charities to continue with the amazing work they do.

Lets not forget that we are also celebrating the talents of so many women who make, sing, create, help, write, dance and lots more, as well as just generally being amazing.

There’s still time to be involved! If you’ve any ideas email us at themollyqueen@googlemail.com or find ‘LadyFest 2011’ on Facebook. Bring on the redefinition of feminism!

Here’s the link for tickets…. Go on…. You know you want to…

P.S. a few men can come too… I suppose…

Paper Crafts and The Impending Night Market

 Paper Crafts

Here's a sneaky peek at some of the paper crafts I've been working on of late.
My favourite items are the 'box cards'. Miniature personalised greeting boxes that each hold a small scroll so you can write your own message. Perfect for the first Anniversary present as yes, they are made of paper. Victorian Novelettes to be precise. See them in person at The Night Market on Tuesday (scroll down for more info on what else to expect!)
Assorted PaperCrafts
From Left to Right, A paper face, features quilled, including the ears (though you cant quite see them in the picture) and tied with a black ribbon so the piece can be hung as well as stood. A book end, with flowing folded pages and set into a beautifully made dove-tail hinged, quality piece of wood. A stack of box cards, with the smallest of all atop the pile. A miniature 'moving house' gift, adorned with words and quilled loops. 3 box cards, each personalised with different themes and with miniature scrolls so that personal messages can be written inside. Also the perfect home for souvenirs and small gifts. Underneath the stack, is a quilled tree atop a map of Cambridge, with a personalised gift tag. The map is a beautiful retro blue and adds an extra dimensional to this piece. Next, is a large, quilled portrait of an androgynous person. I had started without an intention for sex and no preference appeared, hence the name. Quilled into a golden frame, this is an unusual piece that ha paved the way for me to get a lot more creative with my quilling! In front of that is another box card, and the other, almost symmetrical book end.
Box Cards and a decorative Book End.

PaperCrafts
Here is a close up of the Box card. This one is quite invocative of an intimate relationship, see what the words invoke in your mind.....

Box Card
Really bad quality photo of another box card... quite an emotive quote.
"She broke off and wiped the corner of each eye with her silk handkerchief fastened
in the button of her black satin robe."
My favourite Box Card that I will have to make more of, I imagine....
"You are my best friend."
Here's a view of the 'New House' miniature before the scrolls have been added.
Box Cards stacked precariously

The Games People Play Exhibition

Opening Tonight at the DEDA in Derby...
And showcased at The Indian Community Centre in the main Atrium...
(perfect for after curry browsing)
Luncheon club open 12 - 1.30 week days.

"Games People Play is an innovative project involving exhibitions by English and Indian artists, examining the commonalities between games and the way we conduct our lives – negotiating, competing, preparing and practicing, even cheating, winning, losing.

Part of the larger exhibition Games People Play, the project examines the broad idea of sports and games, looking at a deeper level at the ways people handle relationships. "

Beauteous Bookends and a Greeting box preview...

A wonderful woodcrafter friend of mine made these beautiful bookend shapes for me in a gorgeous dark stained wood with dovetail joints.

I then went all 'book mobile' on them and created almost symmetrical waves/petals adorned with spirals circles and squiggly bits. Here are two photo's to show them next to each other and what they could look like on your bookshelf.

See these and more papercrafts at The Night Market
Tuesday 18th October 6pm - 11pm
The Golden Fleece

Book Ends (first pair)

Book End on a bookshelf (not my book collection!) with Box Card.

In the last photo, you can see the first ever greeting box I have made, its a tiny little 'specimen' box for butterfly collectors/gem stones etc with a glass front. Using quilling techniques, I have created a flowing and decorative background, with a message 'Love is Wild' in the background.

The glass is also decorated with an arch to represent a wedding ceremony. The back can then be decorated with a handwritten message or decoupaged with words from novels (sometimes with hilarious consequences).

The idea is that the box can then hold a small souvenir from your wedding day, a note or a small photo.

There are range of different cards to be seen at The Night Market, with other mediums including gift boxes, frames and more!

More photo's soon, please watch this space

Stuff of Life 2011 in photos

Considering it is the 21st Century, and we've just about recovered from the aftermath of the riots, we are currently in the midst of a recession and countless other 'problems with society'.... for a very small community to come together to celebrate the things we love about life in the form of an amazing festival with dance, music, arts and crafts, facepainting, story-telling, amazing food, bread and general joviality.... i'd say we did pretty well.

Here are some images of the day, kindly taken by George.

Shagufta performing her native dance to start of the day's proceedings

The Samba band lead the procession, 'sweeping to rhythm'.
A selection of Art on the railings, this year run by Leanne Trappe, her work is shown here.

The Festival was a great success, we have managed to raise enough money to help us with local community projects and maintenence, including the cobbling of Hedley Villas. To find out more about the Sherwood Rise Residents Association and what they do, please visit www.uptherise.co.uk or pop along to one of their meetings. We will be planning the Festival for next year but also have a series of other events lined up.

Look out for Christmas festivities and the May day Picnic as well as other community days.

Thanks for reading, and please check back soon for details of the competition winners and some of the entries to our Public Poetry project; not forgetting the photo's from the Public Cams!

Keep up the community Spirit!
